File this one under 'the joke's on me'. Never underestimate the power of religion to stir the senses. This isn't about theology, I know nothing about the study of Theos. Instead it is about Jesus bumper stickers. They are a collectable item. And how! At a resent auction a 1958 original, pristine bumper sticker with the saying 'Have You Prayed Today?' fetched 1.2 million dollars. That was the sticker that spawned an industry. It was followed by the witty 'Not Perfect, Just Forgiven'. This pious to poet gem can command a price in the $10,000 to $50,000 range. And who can forget the ever enigmatic, ' God is my Co-Pilot'. Which always baffled me. Why relegate the Creator of the Universe to wearing headphones and checking off fuel and distance readings on His clipboard? I say bump the Dude right up to pilot. I know that I would feel safe. The 70's and 80's inspired a whole new generation of Born Again Christians. The great minds once again felt compelled to display their eternal joy. In this group we have such gems as... No God, No Peace. KNOW God, KNOW peace. Turn on to Jesus. God said it, I believe it. That settles it. My boss is a Jewish carpenter. (really now) And this craze is not limited to the simply devout that don't care if they devalue their cars. Barbra Streisand is a collector. And Bono has secured his place in heaven with a whopping 400 vintage stickers. A woman in High Point, NC by the name of Lenore Crabtree sold her son's collection to the tune of $340,000. God works in mysterious ways. In my opinion that was the crest of the really great stickers. Many now are blatant rip offs of popular commercials. Like... Got Jesus? milk Jesus- Don't leave home without Him. Visa I (heart) Jesus. New York The problem with slogans are their malleability in the hands of the enemy. Here's what the spoilsports have to say... Is there life after death? Touch my car and find out. Instead of being born again, why not just grow up? Jesus is coming--look busy. Jesus loves you...everyone else thinks you're an asshole. Jesus Saves- Gretzy gets the rebound and scores! Jesus protect me from your followers. And if you are modest you can always go with a Jesus fish. Be warned that anyone sporting a sticker or a fish is no more courteous or a better driver than anyone else. In fact with their head in the clouds you may want to give a wide berth
