Overheard at a Class Reunion

Tonight we attended a class reunion from high school. It was quite informal and included 4 years of high school grads, all of us over 55 years of age. It's funny how people are so darn gullible. A question from a fellow grad "where are you two living now - are you still nearby?" (to the village I grew up in) got response from my dear husband - "we have a double-wide." I chastised him and said "that's no way to talk about your wife!" This comment went right over the head of the former classmate who eagerly picked up on the comment and said, "do I have this right, are you living in a trailer, right here in our little village?" DUH! The property taxes in the little village are through the roof - we had to move 5 miles out to be find anything reasonable.

Then another guy told us he lived in Green Bay. I mentioned a recent trek to "mecca" to see the Packers practice. He said "oh, I am not into football at all. " I suggested that he move before people learned about that flaw. He said "oh, we've been there for 10 years, have never seen a game or saw a player." I almost grabbed him! (It's the testosterone thing!) How could he live near #4 (Favre) and not appreciate that.

But I digress. Then someone asked if I was "still working." I responded that I sell full-time on ebay. They said "oh, I checked into that once but never bought anything." I said, "it's a lot of fun and you can get some neat bargains - what do you collect?" They said "nothing." Once again, I thought these people should be put out of their misery. They asked what I sell and when I said "just about anything and everything", they responded with "but do people really BUY things on the net?" Where have these folks been? We are old but not elderly! Could I have come so far and they are lost in the dust?

It was also fun to hear "Sue, you have not changed a bit" when in fact she had blue hair and gained 50 pounds, plus became a plaid-dresser. Of course the woman who yelled that out was with a guy with a swoop-do and sansa-belt pants. What can I Say? It was great to see people from "the past", learn about their lives, kids, grandkids, etc. But there is a reason we see them but every 5 years or so. The bond of high school is gone and we go about our lives and connect with "newer" friends for a reason. Mostly the things that connect us after those "important but over" high school years. We are glad for the place we are in life. And hope it lasts for many years!
