Obsession, Compulsion, Collection: On Objects, Display Culture, and Interpretation
I Collect Sunglasses?

I am aware that I collect records and CD’s. I have a whole room devoted to the collection that also houses memorabilia and various musical instruments. I have other collections that are on display in my home and I am always adding to them, but lately I noticed I have a collection that I wasn’t aware existed.

I was doing some much needed cleaning and kept noticing sunglasses. I’d open any drawer and there would be a pair. If I pulled out an old jacket, guess what I would discover? You are correct, there would be a pair of sunglasses in the pocket. When I looked under the couch, in my car, on the table at my Dad’s house, on the front porch of my in-laws, and even on display at my favorite watering hole…everywhere I turned, there would be a handy pair of my sunglasses. I dare you to go look under your bed. That pair of wrap-arounds probably belongs to me. So far this week, I have counted a total of 22 unique pairs of sunglasses.

Why do I need 22 pairs of sunglasses? I know when I travel I take four pairs of sunglasses. I will spend much of time hunting for a pair or two and the other two will be needed to replace the ones that blew off when I stuck my head out of the moving vehicle. There are moments when I am in the city and I notice I forget a pair of sun specs and thus I pick up a pair from a street vendor to hold me over. Other times, I see a pair that will serve as the perfect fashion accessory to complete my look and so I make yet another shades purchase. My sunglasses come in multiple styles from various decades in various shapes and sizes. I have pairs I don’t recall purchasing and question if they are even mine. Did I attend some strange sunglass swap session or did some other unaware shades saver drop a pair at my home? I haven’t a clue.

I guess everyone probably has unaware collections. My brother has informed me that he has a collection of lighters. Maybe you have multiple matchbooks scattered about or candles here and there, it could be hats or even pint glasses that you keep swiping from the pub. They are all around and you never think about them as a collection, yet there is no denying you have some compulsion to horde these “treasures.”

What is secretly collecting in your home and by the way did I leave my big round white sunglasses in your car?
