Vintage Fashions, Part Three

This time, the 'experts' respond to the following question: "Do you think the eras we now think of as vintage will always be popular or will they fade as younger folks feel nostalgic for periods closer to their time (as in the 70's & 80's)?"

Mimi, retro-styled artist, said:

"This is something I've really thought about...I believe the 70's and 80's will not be as fondly imitated in the future...the decline of quality/beautifully made clothing seemed to occur around 1968. After that point, cutting corners began. Some of the clothing styles of the 70's -80's are fun, but they lack the substance of the pre-1968 styles. The push for cheaply made goods was already in place by 1980; it's hard for me to feel nostalgic over my fluorescent tube socks and ugle parachute pants. People are already having "80's parties, etc." but it seems more like an ironic "campy" thing, poking fun at the fashions rather than respecting them."

Jason, the Java Bachelor, said:

"... I think the "swinger era" will always have a certain amount of cashe. Most people gravitate toward nostalgic time periods because those periods or parts of those periods were seen as cool. And there was no era cooler. Rat Pack. Lounge Music. Martinis. That decade had it all."

"Are the 70's and 80's becoming hot nostaliga properties? Of course. Just watch VH1 or "That 70's Show." Not only are people interested in past generations, but they always hold a warm spot in their hearts for the era they grew up in. When those people hit mid-life, and the personal reflection that comes with it, they are always drawn back to their youth."

"The big question is whether or not people will be burnt out with those decades in the decades to come."

Miss Kitty, a vintage fashions shop owner, says:

"I think it will endure, although this (fading out) may be true, we will see!"

Joan, a retro fashions shop owner & interior designer, said:

"Older eras will always be popular whether from the 1920's to the 1990's. Using good ideas from each time period will work for you regardless. A child born in the 1990's will find the 60's appealing because they did not experience it."
