Under his whole name (A. Bowdoin Van Riper) ABVR teaches history at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA. He's the author of four books on the history of science and technology, including two that deal with popular culture: "Science and Popular Culture: A Reference Guide and Imagining," & "Flight: Aviation in Popular Culture." Other results of his cross-fertilization of pop culture and scholarship are available on his website: STS 101. Born in Massachusetts in 1963, ABVR is well into his fourth decade of reading, watching, and listening to things of questionable artistic merit and dubious staying power. Experience has shown that he can remember the fifth-billed actor in a thirty-year-old science fiction movie, but cannot remember to fill the bird feeders regularly. Plausible explanations of this phenomenon should be directed to his wife, who has been wondering about it for years.
